Defining Goals (60 to 1 Aviation Rule)

  • Where there is no vision, the people perish – Proverbs 29
  • In order to increase giving, you need to clarify your plan.
  • You can be uncertain about outcomes, but you can’t be unclear about them.
  • Think about people who go off to war. They’re never convinced of the outcome. But you better believe there’s a clear plan in place.
  • Two important things about Clarity: 1) You need it. Clarity will help you stay grounded in the present. It allows you to measure your progress. You will feel motivated to push harder because you have a solid understanding of where you are and how far you have to go. 2) Your church needs it. Clarity gives the congregation perspective. And it drives them to make a decision because they feel a sense of urgency around a deadline. When you choose a date and percentage amount, the success rate of your campaign grows exponentially. On the other hand, when you mystify it—you settle for an unidentified dream and a general goal—you limit yourself. People simply won’t respond as much. Why? Because people want clarity. They want the target to be clear and concise.
You see, without taking this step, you can’t move forward. You’re just floating around in the dream world of “I hope”, “I wish”, and “it will happen sometime”.

Pick dates

  • Dates are huge. I don’t know about you, but I’m bad about avoiding decisions until I have to make them. Applications. Work deadlines. Oil changes. I put things off until I know I can’t put them off anymore. You may be like me in that regard. That sense of urgency, however, can work in your favor when it comes to raising money.
  • Have you ever noticed that people get more interested in sporting events when it gets closer to the end of the game? Some people don’t even bother tuning in to football games until the fourth quarter. When you take this step and tell people a deadline, you’re sparking interest. You’re tuning them in. You’re letting them know when the fourth quarter ends. You’re driving them to make decisions.
  • Now that you have a date in mind, the next step is to pick a percentage amount
    • When you specify a number or percentage, it tells potential donors that you have a plan. And it gives them context for how their action fits into that plan.
    • Do your research before you announce it to your congregation
      • For example, when church members ask why you want a 35% increase in digital giving in four weeks, you should be able to explain it. When an elder or deacon asks why you want 30 new families to set up recurring donations online, you need to tell them why.
  • People respond to specifics. You need clarity and a plan.
  • Most leaders feel timid when it comes to stuff like this. They’re afraid to say exactly what they want. And that creates a huge obstacle.
  • When you’re timid and hesitant, you’ll almost always talk around the goal. You’ll be unclear. You’ll sound unprepared. And unfortunately, a lack of clarity will kill your campaign faster than anything else.
  • Once the campaign launches, if everyone in your church, family, team, and group of friends doesn’t know the answer to these questions, you’re in trouble.

Stop Doubting Start Dominating

Stop Doubting Start Dominating

Stop Doubting Start Dominating

  • We all have some Doubter in us. The Doubter sounds like this:
    • “I’ll try a ton of different strategies and see what works.”
    • “I can’t sell out to just one thing, because what if it fails?”
    • “I can stay an extra hour or two at the office. My wife will understand.”
    • “It will get better at some point.”
    • “It’s okay to check my phone impulsively. My kids aren’t old enough to notice yet.”
    • “Sure, I did some things wrong. But so did they. In fact, they should apologize first.”
  • The Doubter tells us what we want to hear. The Doubter helps us justify our current state of affairs. He has conversations with us all day long.
  • The Doubter is so good, because he has been with us so long that we don’t even notice him anymore.

So What Should We Do?

  • Kill him. Kill the Doubter. Right now. Stop doubting and start dominating immediately in the area of your church finances.
  • Immediately means immediately. Not an hour from now. It means right now.
  • A wise man once said…
    • If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to depart into hell. Matthew 5:29-30
  • Those are some strong words. Jesus had no tolerance for anything that would hold you back from the Kingdom.
And you should have no tolerance for anything inside you that holds you back from achieving your ministry vision.
  • The point is this: don’t listen to the Doubter when it comes to your church finances.
  • Don’t listen to the Doubter when it comes to digital giving in your church.
  • That’s what domination does—it takes massive action now.
  • Whether the Doubter is your thoughts, the lies you believe, or the Enemy himself, you cannot let him win.

God is with you and for you! It’s time to kill the Doubter!

  • Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 4who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. – Matthew 13:45-46
  • As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” But at these words [a]he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property. -Mark 10:17-22
