Could you be underestimating your congregation’s potential? I’ve had numerous discussions with pastors about this very issue. There’s a genuine concern that setting higher expectations might lead to accusations of greed or an excessive focus on money. This apprehension often drives pastors to consider lowering their standards as the safer route. But does that assumption hold true?
Turning our attention to the pages of the Bible, particularly Luke 19, we can find insight from Jesus Himself regarding this topic. Let’s explore what wisdom He offers on the matter.
Don’t Expect Too Little From Your Congregation
You might be familiar with the parable of the pounds or minas. In this story, servants received a modest sum to engage in business until the king’s return. Have you ever paused to consider just how modest those “pounds” were? These pounds, or minas, are merely about 2% of the “talents” mentioned in the preceding parable. That’s a striking contrast in size.
Yet, what’s intriguing is the outcome for the servants who invested this seemingly insignificant amount and generated a favorable return for the king. What did they receive in return?
Ten cities?
Five cities?
In actuality, their diligent investment of this minuscule sum, which yielded a commendable profit for the king, resulted in a reward beyond imagination. Astonishingly, they were granted whole cities! This narrative aligns with the Scriptures’ assertion that those entrusted with a little who managed it prudently were entrusted with far more (Luke 19:17).
Isn’t this a vision that stirs inspiration? It’s a promise that resonates: if you take the modest resources I’ve given you and use them wisely, the rewards that follow will be immeasurable. Wouldn’t you eagerly embrace such an offer?
Make an Irresistible Offer
So, why aren’t we extending that offer to our people? When we share our vision, shouldn’t members think to themselves, “Even if I increase my giving a little, great and powerful things will come to me and others!” Are we expecting too little of our congregations? Unfortunately, that’s exactly what many ministry leaders are doing.
Underestimating the potential of churchgoers when it comes to tithing can lead to a range of negative outcomes. These affect both the individual and the collective spiritual community. When expectations for giving are set too low, it can result in missed opportunities for personal growth, limited impact on community outreach, and a weakened sense of stewardship among congregants.
Setting higher expectations for tithing encourages spiritual growth. It also enables effective outreach and promotes responsible financial stewardship aligned with faith values. Put simply, you’re doing more than harming your church budget by expecting too little from your members. In the grand scheme of things, you’re hurting your members and their spiritual growth as well.
