The Art of Patience: Waiting on God During the Cold Seasons of Our Journey
There are moments in life when our spiritual journey feels akin to a hard winter’s day. Despite the biting cold and barren landscape, we must continue our walk, trusting that spring’s warmth is on the horizon. This season of waiting is not simply about enduring the cold; it’s a time to cultivate patience and learn the art of waiting on God.
The Winter of Our Spiritual Journey
Winter in our spiritual lives can take many forms: unanswered prayers, unfulfilled dreams, or difficult life circumstances we can’t seem to escape. In these times, it’s challenging to keep faith when God’s timeline doesn’t align with our own. Yet, the Bible repeatedly encourages us to wait on the Lord. “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry,” says Psalm 40:1, exemplifying the posture of patient expectation.
Learning Patience from Nature
In nature, winter does not rush to become spring. Each season has its duration and purpose. The same precision is woven into the fabric of our spiritual existence. James 5:7-8 exhorts believers to be patient and stand firm, using the example of a farmer who waits for the land to yield its valuable crop. The farmer knows the importance of the seasons; nothing can be rushed. Similarly, we too must understand that spiritual patience is not passive waiting but an active endurance.
Patience in Biblical Figures
The Bible is replete with stories of individuals who exemplified patience as they waited on God. Consider Joseph, who endured years of setbacks—sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned—before God’s plan for him to become a ruler in Egypt was fulfilled. Or Abraham, who waited decades for the promised son. Their examples teach us that divine delays are not divine denials; for those who wait on God, there is an eventual harvest of righteousness.
The Fruits of Patience
Waiting is not fruitless. There is substantial growth happening beneath the surface during these cold seasons. Romans 5:3-4 says, “Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Patience is inexorably linked to hope—it is the fertile ground in which faith can grow, even when the soil seems frozen and unyielding.
Building Patience in Community
A tree standing alone in winter faces every blistering wind. However, trees growing together in a forest support and protect each other. Similarly, faith communities can foster patience by bearing one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2) and encouraging each other during seasons of waiting. The collective strength found in church families, prayer groups, or small groups can provide warmth and sustenance during the coldest times of our faith journey.
Patience as Worship
Waiting is not a passive state; it can be an active form of worship. When we wait on God, we acknowledge His sovereignty and perfect timing. “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint,” Isaiah 40:31 promises. Here, waiting on God is equated with spiritual renewal and the promise of an eventual outpouring of divine strength.
The Hope of Spring
As winter represents a season of waiting, spring symbolizes the fulfillment of that wait. The hope of a new season stands as a powerful reminder that life continues even in the bleakest times. Lamentations 3:25-26 states, “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” This hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts (Romans 5:5).
The art of patience is one of the most challenging disciplines to master, especially during the cold seasons of our spiritual journey. Waiting on God demands belief in His goodness and faithfulness, even when we can’t perceive His workings. It involves trusting in the unseen progress and growth within us and looking forward to the fulfillment of His promises.
Winter teaches us to wrap ourselves not in impatience and discontent but in the assurance that this too shall pass. This season is a time to reflect, to grow, and to prepare for the blossoming of spring, both in the natural world and within the depths of our souls. As we learn to wait on God, let us remember the words found in Psalm 27:14, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”
Each step taken in patience is a bold declaration of our trust in God’s plan. It’s the art of waiting with anticipation for the first buds of spring and the fulfillment of His time. As winter eventually yields to the renewal of spring, so will our seasons of waiting culminate in the abundant life God has promised to those who faithfully endure.
