What a 1500-year-old Poem Says About Your Giving
Did you have to read Beowulf in high school?
It’s the oldest story in English literature and if you get the right version, it’s a rip-roaring tale.
Here’s the short version: A creature named Grendel is terrorizing King Hrogarth and his men.
Hrograth hears of a great warrior named Beowulf and asks him to come help.
Beowulf shows up, Grendel attacks and Beowulf rips his arm off and Grendel dies.
And there was much rejoicing.
But a few nights later Grendel’s mother shows up and kills a bunch of men and carries them off to her lair at the bottom of a swamp!
Beowulf dives into the terrifying swamp, loses his awesome sword, finds a new sword in mama’s lair, and kills her with it.
Lesson? If you don’t get to the root problem, it will keep coming back.
If you kill the monster and don’t kill the creature that gave birth to the monster, your big ol’ problem will come roaring back worse than before.
What on earth does this have to do with your member giving?
Getting to the Root of Your Giving Problem
Well, in our dealings with churches around the country, we find that a lot of church leaders just want to deal with Grendel.
They want new giving software or text message giving. They want to try direct mail campaigns and email marketing. They develop giving sermons and financial planning programs. They get new giving envelopes or giving kiosks. And the list goes on and on.
And those things will make things better…for a while.
But if you don’t take on Grendel’s mother, the problem will come back.
What is Grendel’s mother?
Not communicating a compelling, inspiring vision that makes members want to give.
