The Rich Young Ruler and Your Giving

Let’s take a look at the parable of the Rich Young Ruler in Mark 10:17-22

17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.”21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

I’m going to apply this story to your giving numbers. Bear with me…

What Must I Do?

A rich man comes to Jesus and asks what he must DO to get eternal life.

Jesus tells him the rules.

The rich man says, yes, I’ve DONE all those things my whole life.

Jesus then says, “OK, if you’re so interested in what you must DO to get eternal life, just give up everything you own, give it to the poor, follow me, and you’ll get there.’

And the man doesn’t want to do that.

Now, I don’t think Jesus was saying that we all have to sell our belongings and give to them to the poor to get to heaven.

I think he’s saying just when we think we’ve DONE all we can to earn God’s favor, there’s always more to DO. It’s so easy to put our faith in something we DO instead of God. For the rich young ruler, he was putting his trust in something else; his earthly riches, instead of his Heavenly Father.

Jesus is saying, “You don’t get to heaven through what you DO. There is a greater, more amazing way. If you think you have to DO something to get to heaven, there will always be more to DO. In fact, you’ll never be able to DO enough!

You know the more amazing way: It’s called grace.

And that’s a pretty compelling vision!

What Can I Do to Increase Giving?

Same applies to increase the giving in your church.
You could get there by DOING more.

New software, text message giving, direct mail campaigns, email marketing, giving sermons, financial planning programs, giving envelopes, kiosks…

All that is great. And you should DO it.

(Just like you should follow the Golden Rule and the Ten Commandments.)

But that will only help a little if you don’t also provide something amazing.

What is that something amazing?

A compelling, inspiring vision that makes people want to give.

All the other things you can DO will just lead to more and more doing.

But when you have an amazing message, all the doing becomes more effective and easier!
